Police
say thieves using home
inspection as cover story
(02 Sept. 2003) – Police in
Stratford, Conn., are warning
home sellers and others to be
careful about who they let in
their front doors.
Police say men posing as home
inspectors, claiming to be sent
by the real estate agent, have
gained entry to homes for the
purpose of robbing the owners.
They also say women posing as
new residents of neighborhoods
have gained entry to neighbor
homes claiming to want to
introduce themselves, but use
the opportunity to burglarize
houses.
The police say the robbers
are known as “traveling
thieves” who commit a handful
of crimes and then move to
another area.
Pennsylvania
has enacted important changes to
the law that govern home
inspectors.It
now provides a uniform
definition for the term
"home inspection" and
for a national home inspection
association. It establishes that
home inspectors shall conduct
their inspection in accordance
with the standards of practice
set forth by a professional home
inspection trade association.
It further outlines consumer
remedies as they relate to a
home inspection, insurance
requirements for inspectors and
establishes penalties for
misrepresentations of fact in an
inspection report. The law is
scheduled to take effect in
December 2001. Read
Senate Bill 1032 (Acrobat *.PDF
